STATEMENT"Making art is having a contract with an idea....Drawing, to me, is a meditative state where I enter a world of calm reflection and interpretation. The art happens somewhere between what my eyes see and my hand interprets. I have a passion for trees; they are heroes of the environment and I want to honor them in my current work. This work consists of large graphite drawings done on multiple sheets of paper. These create their own mood along with the image. I want to bring the viewer's focus up close to examine shadows and textures for an intimate visual experience. In my older work the graphite tree drawings may have an insert of a colored pencil element to add interest. I also did a series of rock drawings, all in colored pencil, with a close-up presentation for a different aspect of landscape. The still life work is mostly done in colored pencil. I use negative space as a forceful element in the drawings and to bring them into a contemporary format. Because I am very interested in other cultures, I like to use various folk artifacts to make visual statements about diversity.....Enjoy! |
